Settings, storage, and updates
Choose where new work is saved, manage the tray, update Screenix, and keep local projects organized.
On this page
Find the right settings
- Open Settings in the main sidebar for Dark mode, System tray icon, Save location, and About & help.
- On Record, choose Studio or Instant, then open Recording settings below Workflow to change that mode's options. Changes for future recordings do not rewrite an existing recording.
- Use the editor sidebar to change the project you currently have open. Review the separate export settings when making a finished video.
- Open your profile for account, license, and update information.
Choose where new recordings are saved
Changing this setting affects new recordings. It does not move existing projects. The default recording folder is Videos/screenix in your home folder. Screenshot projects use Pictures/Screenix. Linux treats uppercase and lowercase folder names as different names.
The export dialog has its own Save to destination for the finished video. Saving a project and exporting a video are separate actions. See Projects and imports.
- Open Settings and find Output.
- Next to Save location, select Choose and pick a folder you can write to. Keep an external drive connected while recording and processing.
- Make a short recording and use Open folder to confirm where it was saved.
Find local projects and keep backups
Open Projects in the sidebar. Clear the search, select All, and use Refresh if a recent project is missing. The default scan looks under your home folder's Videos folder and Pictures/Screenix, including a limited number of subfolder levels.
A custom recording folder elsewhere may not appear in that default scan. For easy reopening, keep new recordings within the Videos folder without deeply nesting them. Keep existing files in place and contact support if you cannot find a custom-folder project. Sign in if Screenix asks before opening Projects.
Back up the project folder along with the original screen recording, separate camera and audio files, and any imported music or background image it uses. Keep their locations stable so the editor can find them.
Use the system tray
The tray menu includes Show Screenix, Start Recording, Stop Recording, Take Screenshot, and Quit. The icon changes while recording or paused.
If you disable System tray icon in Settings, Screenix asks for a restart. Finish and save your work before restarting. If the tray is not visible on your desktop, use the recording toolbar or your keyboard shortcuts instead.
Closing the main window during a recording can hide or minimize it while recording continues. Use Stop Recording to finish the take.
Install an update
In-app installation is supported for installed DEB and RPM packages. For Flatpak or another installation method, use that package's update method or get the matching download from your dashboard.
- Finish any recording or export and save your project. An update restarts the app.
- When an update is available, use Update & restart in the update banner or Settings > About & help. Your profile also offers Update when a release is ready.
- Wait through downloading and installing. Approve your system's installation prompt if one appears.
- Screenix restarts after a successful installation. Reopen your project and review the changelog for what changed.
