Fix screenshot problems
What to do when capture, selection, image loading, copying, or saving does not work as expected.

A desktop picker appears, or capture is cancelled
On Wayland, Select area and Window use your desktop’s screenshot picker. This can look different on GNOME, KDE, or another desktop. Make the selection there and accept it. Cancelling the picker stops that capture; choose the screenshot action again when you are ready.
Full screen may also open a picker when the desktop requires it. If Screenix reports a screenshot portal error, retry the capture and complete any permission prompt. If the error repeats, send the exact message and your desktop name through the contact form.
The wrong display or area was captured
Check the selected display in the recording source controls, then return to Screenshot and capture again. A desktop picker may make the final display selection itself.
If Window mode does not highlight the application you need in Screenix’s selection screen, drag around it manually. You can also take a full-screen screenshot and use Crop in the editor.
A window capture is a picture of what is visible. Bring the window to the front before capturing, especially if another application covers it. For windows spanning multiple displays, move the window onto one display first.
Screenix reports a capture tool error
An error mentioning ffmpeg x11grab relates to screenshot capture on X11. An error mentioning grim or the screenshot portal relates to capture on Wayland. Copy the full message so support can identify which capture path failed.
On Wayland, Screenix tries an available direct capture tool for full-screen screenshots and can fall back to the desktop portal. Area and window capture use the portal directly. A grim message alone does not mean every screenshot mode requires grim.
If no monitors are available, reconnect or enable the display and try again. For repeated failures, include your Linux distribution, desktop, and whether you use Wayland or X11 when you ask for help.
An imported image is blank, or buttons stay disabled
Wait for the image to load before using Copy, Save As, or Share. These controls are disabled while an image is not ready or another image action is in progress.
Open image offers PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and TIFF files. Support for some formats depends on the image support built into your system. If a file does not display, open it in another image app and save a PNG copy, then import that copy.
Treat an imported image as a still screenshot. The screenshot editor is not an animation editor, even when the original file is an animated GIF.
Copy or Save As does not work
- An upgrade message appears: screenshot Copy and Save As require a paid license, including when the editor is available during the trial.
- Copy finishes, but paste does nothing: try a destination that accepts image pasting. You can also use Save As and insert the saved PNG into the destination.
- Failed to save screenshot: choose a writable folder, confirm there is enough free disk space, and try a simple filename.
- Export is not supported by this system webview: choose PNG instead of JPEG or WebP.
- A shortcut types or copies text instead: click outside the text field first, or use the top bar button.
An edit disappeared or the image looks different
Crop and Magnify have separate Select region and Preview views. Choose Preview in the main toolbar to judge the finished image. The Select and drawing tools show the image without magnification so you can position edits. Use Select to select annotations or redactions and reveal their handles.
The bottom zoom and Fit controls only change your view of the canvas. Use Magnify when you want the enlargement to appear in the saved or shared image.
Ctrl+A followed by Delete or Backspace removes every annotation and redaction. To recover a recent edit or deletion, use Undo or Ctrl+Z. Use Redo, Ctrl+Shift+Z, or Ctrl+Y to restore an undone edit. Click outside text fields first. History is available during the current editor session and is not restored when you reopen a project.
If a project will not reopen, keep its project.screenix file beside screenshot.png. If a custom wallpaper is missing, restore that file or choose another background. If edits do not return after reopening, keep the project folder and contact [email protected] with the steps that led to it.
