Screen Studio for Chromebook: the extension route to that look.

Screen Studio only runs on macOS, and a Chromebook can't install Mac or Windows apps at all. The one way to get auto zoom and a smooth cursor on ChromeOS is a Chrome extension, and that's what Screenix for Chrome is.

The short answer

The short version

Updated November 2026

  • Screen Studio is a Mac app with no Chromebook, Windows or web version. Nothing from the Screen Studio family runs on ChromeOS.
  • ChromeOS can't install desktop recorders, so on a Chromebook the Screen Studio look comes from an extension. Screenix for Chrome adds auto zoom on clicks, a smooth redrawn cursor, click effects and a camera bubble to tab recordings.
  • For the ChromeOS desktop, the shelf or Android apps, use the built-in Screen Capture tool. It records a plain WebM with no editing.
  • Screenix for Chrome is free with a watermark, $19 once removes it. On school-managed Chromebooks the admin has to allow the extension and developer tools.

Why an extension

On ChromeOS, the browser is the platform

A Chromebook runs Chrome, Android apps and, on some models, a Linux container. It doesn't run Mac or Windows software, so every desktop recorder with Screen Studio-style effects is off the table. Extensions are the native way to add features, and they install in seconds without admin rights on a personal Chromebook.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab you're on through Chrome's screencast, without the system cursor, and keeps mouse movement and clicks as data. It then draws a smooth cursor, zooms on your clicks and frames the recording on a background. Instant mode hands you the MP4 the moment you stop. Studio mode opens an editor for trims, zooms, cursor themes and the camera bubble, then exports up to 4K.

What it covers

Good for most of what a Chromebook is used for

Google Docs, Slides, Classroom, a web app, a website, a Canvas or Moodle course: these all open in a tab, so they all record with Screenix. The recording follows you across tabs in the same window, through links and page reloads.

What it won't record is anything outside Chrome: the ChromeOS desktop, the shelf, the Files app, Android apps or the Linux container. For those, press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows and use the built-in Screen Capture tool, then accept that the result has the system cursor and no zooms.

  • Microphone, camera and tab audio in the popup
  • Alt+Shift+R to start and stop
  • Exports save through Chrome, to Downloads or Google Drive
  • Share links need a Screenix yearly or team plan

Managed Chromebooks

Ask your admin for two things

On a school or work Chromebook, the administrator controls which extensions install and whether developer tools are allowed. Screenix needs both, because it captures the page through Chrome's debugging interface. If Add to Chrome is greyed out, or recording won't start, ask them to allow Screenix for Chrome and developer tools in the Google Admin console. Both are policies only the admin can change.

What you get

Every detail of a good demo,
handled for you.

Auto zoom

Zooms that follow your clicks

Screenix zooms in on every click and pans with the cursor, so viewers see what you did without squinting. Keep the automatic zooms or move, resize and add your own on the timeline.

Add to Chrome

The cursor, rebuilt

A cursor that looks animated by hand

Screenix records the page without your system cursor, then draws a crisp macOS-style one in its place, with spring smoothing, click bumps, motion blur and a soft fade when you stop moving. 16 cursor themes, all adjustable.

Add to Chrome

Camera and audio

Your camera, exactly where it belongs

Add your webcam as a bubble you can drag anywhere, round or square, with your microphone and the sound of the tab you started on.

Add to Chrome

Follows your tabs

Switch tabs and the recording comes with you

Open a link, jump to another tab or reload the page. Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window, so a whole flow fits in one take.

Add to Chrome

Know before you install

Tabs only,
and it follows you between them.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab in front of you, so it can draw a perfect cursor over pure page pixels.

Records browser tabs

Screenix captures the page in the tab you're on, at full quality, without your system cursor.

Follows you between tabs

Switch tabs, open links or reload in the same window and the recording keeps going in one take.

Tab audio from the first tab

Your mic and camera record throughout. Page sound comes from the tab you started on.

Not your whole screen

It doesn't capture your desktop, other apps or other windows. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app does.
