How to record a product demo people actually watch.

Most SaaS products live in a browser tab, which makes the demo easier than you think. Plan a short flow, clean up the browser, record it in one take, and let auto zoom and a smooth cursor do the editing.

The short answer

Show one outcome, in one take, in under two minutes.

Updated October 2026

  • Pick one job your product does and show it from start to result. Skip the settings tour.
  • Prepare a clean browser window with demo data, a sensible zoom level and no personal tabs.
  • Record the whole flow with a tab recorder that follows tab switches and zooms on clicks.
  • Trim the ends, speed up waiting, check the zooms, then export MP4 or share a link.

Step by step

Record a product demo in six steps

  1. Step 1

    Write a 5-line script

Problem, the promise, the 3 key actions, the result, the call to action. Say it out loud once. If it runs past two minutes, cut an action.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare the browser

Use a separate Chrome window with only the tabs you need, a demo account with realistic data, bookmarks bar hidden and page zoom at 100 to 125% so text stays readable.

  3. Step 3

    Set up Screenix

Choose Studio mode for full control, or Instant mode with a background and zoom on clicks if the video should be ready the moment you stop. Turn on your mic and camera if you'll narrate.

  4. Step 4

    Record in one take

Click deliberately and pause a beat after each click, because zooms land on clicks. Switch tabs freely: the recording follows the active tab in the window.

  5. Step 5

    Edit the rough edges

Trim the start and end, speed up loading screens with a speed clip, nudge any zoom that feels off, and crop out anything you don't want shown.

  6. Step 6

    Export or share

Export 1080p60 MP4 for a website or 4K for a launch video. Pick 9:16 or 1:1 for social posts. Or create a share link and send it straight from the editor.

What makes a demo work

Viewers need to see the click

The most common reason demos feel hard to follow is scale: a 1440p browser window shrunk into a video player makes every button tiny, and a fast system cursor jumps between them.

Auto zoom fixes the scale by moving in on each click, and a smoothed, larger cursor fixes the jumps. Together they turn a raw recording into something that looks edited, without a timeline session.

  • Pause half a second after each important click
  • Hover over what you talk about, the cursor is your pointer
  • Keep the mouse still while you talk, the cursor fades out on its own

Formats

One recording, every channel

Record once, then export different versions: 16:9 with a background for your landing page, 9:16 for short-form social, 1:1 for LinkedIn, or edge to edge for docs and help centers.

Speed clips from 0.25× to 16× keep long flows short, and the audio keeps its natural pitch when sped up to 4×.

Limits

When a tab recorder isn't enough

If your product is a desktop app or the demo needs your terminal or another program, a tab recorder can't capture it. Screenix for Chrome records browser tabs only. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app records the full screen with the same zoom and cursor.

What you get

Every detail of a good demo,
handled for you.

Auto zoom

Zooms that follow your clicks

Screenix zooms in on every click and pans with the cursor, so viewers see what you did without squinting. Keep the automatic zooms or move, resize and add your own on the timeline.

The cursor, rebuilt

A cursor that looks animated by hand

Screenix records the page without your system cursor, then draws a crisp macOS-style one in its place, with spring smoothing, click bumps, motion blur and a soft fade when you stop moving. Seven cursor themes, all adjustable.

Add to Chrome

Follows your tabs

Switch tabs and the recording comes with you

Open a link, jump to another tab or reload the page. Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window, so a whole flow fits in one take.

From stop to sent

Send a link instead of a file

With a Screenix yearly or team plan, upload from the editor and copy the link. Viewers watch in any browser and can leave timestamped comments. Without one, export MP4 or WebM up to 4K, free.

Know before you install

Tabs only,
and it follows you between them.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab in front of you, so it can draw a perfect cursor over pure page pixels.

Records browser tabs

Screenix captures the page in the tab you're on, at full quality, without your system cursor.

Follows you between tabs

Switch tabs, open links or reload in the same window and the recording keeps going in one take.

Tab audio from the first tab

Your mic and camera record throughout. Page sound comes from the tab you started on.

Not your whole screen

It doesn't capture your desktop, other apps or other windows. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app does.
