How to record a tab in Chrome.

Chrome has no built-in tab recorder, so you need an extension. Here's how to record a tab with your voice, your camera and the page's sound, keep recording while you switch tabs, and end up with a video that looks edited.

The short answer

Install a tab recorder, click record, press stop.

Updated October 2026

  • Add Screenix for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar.
  • Open the tab you want to record, choose your mic, camera and tab audio in the popup, and click Start recording (or press Alt+Shift+R).
  • Work normally. The recording follows you to other tabs, links and reloads in the same window.
  • Press stop. In Instant mode the MP4 is ready right away. In Studio mode you edit, then export up to 4K.

Step by step

Record a Chrome tab, step by step

This takes about a minute the first time. Chrome asks once for microphone and camera access, and never again after that.

  1. Step 1

    Add the extension

Install Screenix for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store, then click the puzzle icon in the toolbar and pin it so the record button is always one click away.

  2. Step 2

    Choose what to capture

Open the popup on the tab you want to record. Turn on your microphone, your camera and the tab's own sound as needed, and pick a 0, 3, 5 or 10 second countdown.

  3. Step 3

    Pick Instant or Studio

Instant renders the finished video while you record, with or without a background and zoom on clicks. Studio keeps the raw recording so you can edit every detail afterwards.

  4. Step 4

    Record and switch tabs freely

Click Start recording or press Alt+Shift+R. Open links, change tabs or reload the page: Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window.

  5. Step 5

    Stop and polish

Press Alt+Shift+R again or stop from the popup. In Studio, trim the ends, adjust the auto zooms, crop, speed up slow parts and tune the cursor.

  6. Step 6

    Export or share

Export MP4 (AV1 or H.264) or WebM from 720p to 4K at 30, 60 or 120 fps, encoded on your computer. Or upload and copy a share link with a Screenix yearly or team plan.

Tab audio

Recording a tab with its sound

Turn on Tab audio in the popup before you start. Screenix records the sound of the tab you start on and keeps playing it through your speakers, so you can still hear the page while you record.

Chrome only lets an extension capture sound from the tab it was started on. If you switch tabs, your microphone and camera keep recording, but the page sound still comes from that first tab. Start the recording on the tab whose sound matters.

Why the cursor looks different

Chrome's tab capture draws your cursor in. Screenix doesn't.

Most tab recorders use Chrome's tab capture, which bakes your system cursor into every frame exactly as it moved: small, jittery and impossible to change later.

Screenix records the page pixels without the cursor and keeps the mouse movement separately. It then draws a smooth, larger cursor with click effects and zooms in on your clicks. You can change all of it after recording, which is why the result looks edited even when you didn't touch a thing.

  • Seven cursor themes, from macOS to playful hand-drawn sets
  • Ripple, highlight, halo or burst click effects
  • Motion blur, sway and a soft fade when the mouse rests

Limits worth knowing

What a tab recorder can and can't capture

A Chrome extension records web pages, not your operating system. Screenix captures the tab in front of you and follows you across tabs in the same window. It doesn't record your desktop, other apps or other windows.

Chrome also doesn't let extensions capture some of its own pages, such as chrome:// settings pages and the Chrome Web Store. For full-screen recording, use your operating system's recorder, or the Screenix desktop app on Linux.

What you get

Every detail of a good demo,
handled for you.

Follows your tabs

Switch tabs and the recording comes with you

Open a link, jump to another tab or reload the page. Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window, so a whole flow fits in one take.

Add to Chrome

The cursor, rebuilt

A cursor that looks animated by hand

Screenix records the page without your system cursor, then draws a crisp macOS-style one in its place, with spring smoothing, click bumps, motion blur and a soft fade when you stop moving. Seven cursor themes, all adjustable.

Add to Chrome

Auto zoom

Zooms that follow your clicks

Screenix zooms in on every click and pans with the cursor, so viewers see what you did without squinting. Keep the automatic zooms or move, resize and add your own on the timeline.

Add to Chrome

Camera and audio

Your camera, exactly where it belongs

Add your webcam as a bubble you can drag anywhere, round or square, with your microphone and the sound of the tab you started on.

Know before you install

Tabs only,
and it follows you between them.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab in front of you, so it can draw a perfect cursor over pure page pixels.

Records browser tabs

Screenix captures the page in the tab you're on, at full quality, without your system cursor.

Follows you between tabs

Switch tabs, open links or reload in the same window and the recording keeps going in one take.

Tab audio from the first tab

Your mic and camera record throughout. Page sound comes from the tab you started on.

Not your whole screen

It doesn't capture your desktop, other apps or other windows. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app does.
