A screen recorder for your Chromebook that edits the video for you.

Your Chromebook already has a screen recorder, and it gives you a raw WebM with a tiny cursor and no way to edit it. Screenix for Chrome records the tab, draws a smooth cursor, zooms in on your clicks and hands you a finished video, on any Chromebook that can install extensions.

The short answer

Install the extension, press record, press stop.

Updated October 2026

  • Add Screenix for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. It's an extension, so there's nothing to download or install on ChromeOS itself.
  • Open the tab you want to record, turn on your microphone, your camera and the tab's sound in the popup, and click Start recording.
  • The recording follows you across tabs, links and page reloads in the same window.
  • Press stop. Instant mode gives you the MP4 right away. Studio mode opens an editor for trims, zooms, cursor and background, then exports up to 4K.

ChromeOS features as documented by Google in October 2026; they vary by ChromeOS version. Screenix records browser tabs only, so for recording Android apps or the ChromeOS desktop, the built-in recorder is the right tool.

Step by step

Record your screen on a Chromebook

About a minute the first time. ChromeOS asks once for microphone and camera access, then remembers your answer.

  1. Step 1

    Add Screenix to Chrome

Open the Chrome Web Store on your Chromebook, search for Screenix, and click Add to Chrome. Pin it from the puzzle icon so the record button stays in the toolbar.

  2. Step 2

Open what you want to record

A Google Doc, a slide deck, a web app, a website, anything in a tab. Click the Screenix icon and choose your microphone, your camera and whether to capture the tab's sound.

  3. Step 3

    Choose Instant or Studio

Instant renders the finished video while you record, zooms included, and it's ready the moment you stop. Studio keeps the raw recording so you can edit it afterwards.

  4. Step 4

    Record

Click Start recording or press Alt+Shift+R. Chrome shows a bar saying Screenix started debugging this browser: that's how it captures the page without the system cursor, and it isn't in the video.

  5. Step 5

    Stop, edit, export

Press Alt+Shift+R again or stop from the popup. In Studio, trim the start and end, adjust the zooms on the timeline, pick a cursor theme and a background, then export the MP4 to your Downloads folder or Google Drive.

Teachers and students

Made for the way Chromebooks are used in class

A lesson walkthrough, feedback on a student's document, a how-to for parents: these are tab recordings. Open the page, record it, and the zooms land on the thing you click, so the viewer looks where you're looking without you narrating every move.

Recording, editing and exporting are free with a small watermark, and there's no account needed to record. Students can use it the same way for presentations and project videos.

On a school-managed Chromebook, your administrator decides which extensions can be installed, and whether developer tools are allowed. Screenix needs the second one too, because it captures the page through Chrome's debugging interface. If Add to Chrome is greyed out, or recording won't start on a managed device, ask them to allow Screenix for Chrome and developer tools in the Google Admin console.

Audio

Your voice, your face and the page's sound

Turn on Microphone in the popup to narrate. Turn on Camera for a bubble that you can place and resize in the editor. Turn on Tab audio to capture the sound of the page, a video you're playing or a web app's audio.

Chrome only captures the sound of the tab you started on. Your microphone keeps recording when you switch tabs, but page sound still comes from the first tab, so start on the tab whose sound matters.

Limits

What it records on a Chromebook, and what it doesn't

Screenix for Chrome records browser tabs. It doesn't record the ChromeOS desktop, the shelf, Android apps or the Linux container. For those, use the built-in Screen Capture tool from Quick Settings.

Chrome also refuses to capture some of its own pages, such as settings and the Chrome Web Store. Everything that opens as a normal web page works.

What you get

Every detail of a good demo,
handled for you.

Auto zoom

Zooms that follow your clicks

Screenix zooms in on every click and pans with the cursor, so viewers see what you did without squinting. Keep the automatic zooms or move, resize and add your own on the timeline.

Add to Chrome

The cursor, rebuilt

A cursor that looks animated by hand

Screenix records the page without your system cursor, then draws a crisp macOS-style one in its place, with spring smoothing, click bumps, motion blur and a soft fade when you stop moving. 16 cursor themes, all adjustable.

Add to Chrome

Camera and audio

Your camera, exactly where it belongs

Add your webcam as a bubble you can drag anywhere, round or square, with your microphone and the sound of the tab you started on.

Add to Chrome

Follows your tabs

Switch tabs and the recording comes with you

Open a link, jump to another tab or reload the page. Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window, so a whole flow fits in one take.

Add to Chrome

Know before you install

Tabs only,
and it follows you between them.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab in front of you, so it can draw a perfect cursor over pure page pixels.

Records browser tabs

Screenix captures the page in the tab you're on, at full quality, without your system cursor.

Follows you between tabs

Switch tabs, open links or reload in the same window and the recording keeps going in one take.

Tab audio from the first tab

Your mic and camera record throughout. Page sound comes from the tab you started on.

Not your whole screen

It doesn't capture your desktop, other apps or other windows. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app does.
