The short answer

Turn on Tab audio and Microphone before you press record.

Updated October 2026

  • Open the Screenix popup on the tab whose sound you want, then switch on Tab audio and pick your microphone.
  • Start recording. Screenix keeps playing the tab through your speakers, so you can still hear it.
  • Your mic, camera and the page sound are stored as separate tracks and mixed when you export.
  • Adjust each track's volume from 0 to 200% in the editor before exporting.

Step by step

Record tab audio and your mic in five steps

  1. Step 1

    Start on the right tab

Chrome only lets an extension capture sound from the tab it was started on. Open the tab that plays the audio you need first, such as your app, a video or a presentation.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on Tab audio

Click the Screenix icon and switch on Tab audio. Add your microphone and camera if you want to narrate. Chrome asks for mic and camera access once.

  3. Step 3

    Record

Press Start recording or Alt+Shift+R. The tab stays audible while you record, because Screenix plays its sound back to your speakers.

  4. Step 4

    Balance the tracks

In Studio, open the Audio panel and set the volume of the tab and the microphone separately, from 0 to 200%, so your voice sits above the page.

  5. Step 5

    Export with sound

Export MP4 with AAC audio (Opus where AAC isn't available) or WebM with Opus. Speed-ups keep the audio's pitch natural.

What Chrome allows

Which sounds you can record from a tab

Chrome's tab capture gives an extension the audio of one tab: the tab where you started recording. Screenix follows you visually when you switch tabs, and your microphone and camera keep going, but the page sound still comes from that first tab.

Screenix records the tab, not your computer, so it doesn't capture system sounds, notifications or audio from desktop apps such as Zoom or Spotify.

  • Page audio from the tab you started on
  • Your microphone, recorded raw so speech onsets aren't clipped
  • Your webcam as a movable bubble

Staying in sync

Why the sound doesn't drift

Long recordings often drift: the voice slowly falls behind the picture. Screenix places every audio packet by its timestamp and fills gaps with silence, so the microphone and tab tracks stay aligned with the video from the first second to the last.

The microphone is opened without Chrome's call processing (echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain). Those filters are built for meetings and tend to cut off the first syllable of each sentence.

Troubleshooting

If your recording has no sound

Check that Tab audio was on before you started, and that you started on the tab that plays the sound. Then check the track volumes in the editor's Audio panel.

If the microphone is silent, make sure Chrome has microphone access for Screenix and that the right input is selected in the popup.

What you get

Every detail of a good demo,
handled for you.

Camera and audio

Your camera, exactly where it belongs

Add your webcam as a bubble you can drag anywhere, round or square, with your microphone and the sound of the tab you started on.

Add to Chrome

Follows your tabs

Switch tabs and the recording comes with you

Open a link, jump to another tab or reload the page. Screenix keeps recording whichever tab is in front in the same window, so a whole flow fits in one take.

Add to Chrome

Auto zoom

Zooms that follow your clicks

Screenix zooms in on every click and pans with the cursor, so viewers see what you did without squinting. Keep the automatic zooms or move, resize and add your own on the timeline.

Know before you install

Tabs only,
and it follows you between them.

Screenix for Chrome records the tab in front of you, so it can draw a perfect cursor over pure page pixels.

Records browser tabs

Screenix captures the page in the tab you're on, at full quality, without your system cursor.

Follows you between tabs

Switch tabs, open links or reload in the same window and the recording keeps going in one take.

Tab audio from the first tab

Your mic and camera record throughout. Page sound comes from the tab you started on.

Not your whole screen

It doesn't capture your desktop, other apps or other windows. On Linux, the Screenix desktop app does.
